195:380: German-Jewish Literature and Culture

The course surveys German-Jewish culture from the eighteenth century to 1935. A wide range of philosophical, theological, autobiographical, literary, poetic, and dramatic texts will be studied, including works by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Moses Mendelssohn, Rahel Varnhagen, Heinrich Heine, Karl Marx, Moses Hess, Franz Kafka, Hermann Cohen, Else Lasker-Schüler, Sigmund Freud, and Martin Buber.
